My long educational journey began when my parents had the vision and foresight to enroll me at Makassed Beit El Atfal in 1950 at the age of three. There, I experienced a different world opening up to me; excited by a new encouraging environment, I excelled academically in all levels. Beit El Atfal linked schooling to the future, it was and still, a progressive and forward thinking school with much to offer to a young and malleable mind like mine. There, I received superior education by highly qualified teachers from Lebanon and abroad, as well as the opportunity to participate in countless extracurricular activities such as physical education, drama singing, dancing, knitting, scouting, and arts. Most importantly, it is there that I formed the most meaningful and long lasting friendships of my life, some of which I maintain to this day. KBWH had awakened a desire to embrace teaching, there, I enjoyed sharing the excitement of education with my peers, as well as helping them achieve their own academic success. Upon graduating from Beit El Atfal –Khaled Bin AlWalid-AlHorj in 1969, I went on to pursue my passion for English literature at Lebanese University. After obtaining my college degree, I decided to give back to Al Makassed that offered me so much, and I became a teacher at GIRL’S SCHOOL, an all-girl school that provided education, opportunity, and the promise of a bright tomorrow to the future women of Lebanon. In recognition of my passion for education, I was promoted to be principle of an elementary grade school, Fatimah Al Zahraa, which was catering to the disenfranchised population of Beirut. It is at that time that I decided to further my education and enroll in an educational administration and supervision program at the American University of Beirut in 1985. This higher diploma allowed me to apply newest and practices of educational supervision on the everyday management of a grade school.

But, more adventure lay ahead. In 1998, I was chosen as principal of Al Jazairi High School, then after 6 years, I transitioned to review and rewrite the Al Makassed Educational System – the educational mission statement, policies and guidelines. This labor of love amounted to nine volumes of educational policy and guidelines applicable to all Al Makassed Schools, from pre-school to high-school.

After retirement, I work as educational consultant at independent. I cannot help but think back and remember where it all began. A school that shaped me, molded me, influenced me, and gave me the best friends I will ever have. Beit Al Atfal was a truly magical place for me. I can only hope that most people can close their eyes and think of the one school that changed them, as I have the luxury of doing.

كما يحن المرء إلى البيت الذي وُلد فيه.. أحنّ إلى مدرستي المقاصدية. والواقع أن لي في المقاصد مدرستين، مدرسة الفاروق حيث درست في المرحلة الإعدادية، وكلية خالد بن الوليد التي كانت يومها مقسومة إلى فرعين: مدرسة خالد بن الوليد وثانوية المقاصد الإسلامية – الحرج، وكنت منخرطاً في الأخيرة، دارساً في المرحلة الثانوية.

إذاً، المقاصد صقلتني في مراحل عمري الابتدائية والثانوية. ولطالما افتخرتُ في أحاديثي أمام الأصدقاء وحتى في مقابلات صحافية أجريتُها بصفتي الإعلامية، أو تلك التي أُجريت معي، بانتمائي للمقاصد.

تعلمتُ في المقاصد .. كل شيء. ذلك أن “العلم في الصغر كالنقش في الحجر”. والحمدلله خرج الحجرُ مصقولاً بصفات إسلامية ووطنية خالصة. في المقاصد صغيراً، تعلمنا الدين الإسلامي الصحيح على أصوله الوسطية والمنفتحة على الآخر. قرأنا القرآن الكريم على أيدي أفضل القراء وأخذنا من أهم الأساتذة في لبنان العلوم والرياضيات واللغتين العربية والفرنسية.

أما في مرحلة الشباب، في الحرج، فكان الوضع مختلفاً، إذ كان على كل منا أن يرسم مستقبل تخصصه وينحو نحو الاتجاه العلمي أو الأدبي الذي يرغب به. إخترتُ دراسة الرياضيات وكنتُ أحب المادة، لكن ذلك لم يشغلني أبداً عن الأدب واللغة العربية التي أعشقها، خصوصاً القواعد. وكنت أعتقد أن القواعد كالرياضيات لها حسابات، من فهمها، فهم المادة. لقيتُ في “كلية خالد” أفضل الأساتذة وأطيب القلوب وأنقى العقول. فلا أنسى لليوم الأساتذة: حلمي عالم وفيصل المطر وعلي معروف وسمير سنو وأحمد ضاني وغازي خطاب وعدنان مناصفي ورضوان عيتاوي وفريحة اللبان والشيخ عبدالله الشعار وعبدالوهّاب سروجي ومحي الدين كشلي وغيرهم الكثير.

تخرجتُ من المقاصد بتفوق ودخلت “كلية بيروت الجامعية” في رأس بيروت وانتقلت من التركيز على اللغة الفرنسية إلى الإنكليزية. اخترتُ دراسة الإعلام فيها، مفضلاً إياه على أي اختصاص علمي آخر. تميزتُ في الجامعة كذلك، ثم دخلت تلفزيون المستقبل، وكنت أحد المساهمين في انطلاقته بصفتي مذيعاً وصحافياً.

في كل يوم، وسأظل دائماً، عندما أسأل عن المقاصد، أجيب بفخر أنني أنتمي إلى هذه المؤسسة الوطنية الإسلامية التي علمت أجيالاً وأجيالاً من أبناء بيروت ولبنان. تعلمنا فيها حب الوطن والوفاء لمن “علمنا الحروف”. وكما أجيب عن المقاصد و”كلية خالد بن الوليد” لا أنسى رجلاً كبيراً هو رفيق الحريري، الذي ساهم أيضاً في تنشئتي العلمية والعملية من خلال “مؤسسة الحريري” و”تلفزيون المستقبل”.

في الختام، كل التوفيق لكلية خالد بن الوليد في رسالتها التعليمية المتجددة. وسدد الله خطى جمعية المقاصد الخيرية الإسلامية في بيروت وكل لبنان، وإلى المزيد من التطور والنمو، بإذن الله.
